A Century of Chant Recordings

Having recently drawn attention to the new recording of music for Christmas Matins, Sancta Nox, it seems appropriate to take a look at the evolution of Gregorian Chant recordings generally. I can recommend the survey undertaken by Jerome Weber – A Century of Chant Recordings. For anyone drawn to the spirit of Chant – and to exploring the wide range of interpretations which we encounter today – this makes absolutely fascinating reading. Furthermore, the author has links to our founder, Dr Mary Berry with whom he spent a few days singing the Chant in her chapel in Cambridge; he includes some of her observations here.
