London Chant Evenings, Farm Street Church
The Feast of Christ the King is upon us, and after two Tuesday evenings in Advent the autumn term will end with a party at 26 The Grove, Ealing, when Peter Wilton traditionally guides us through one of the Great ‘O’ Antiphons as part of an Office sung before supper.
As usual we have worked through a variety of Offices and Antiphons for the Mass appropriate for feast days close to our Tuesday evenings, including an Office of the Dead for deceased members of the Gregorian Association and of the Schola Gregoriana.
On 17th November Dr. Matthew Ward, Director of the Schola of St. Joseph’s, New Malden, and an Associate of the Schola Gregoriana, directed the group in the absence of Peter, introducing us to an antiphon for the Virgin by Hildegard of Bingen, but not easy for us to sing at a sparkling pace like flowing water. We also had a good opportunity to practise repercussion in the Offertory ‘Filiae regum’ from the Common of a Virgin not a Martyr, and an Alleluia for the Feast of St. Hilda of Whitby, of which port Matthew is a native.
Owing to Peter’s prospective move to Devon the spring term will start on Monday 4th January and thence fortnightly on Mondays, ending on Monday 14th March. This will be six evenings altogether. Cost: £5 per evening. Do join us, even if you can only manage some evenings. Ring me on 0208 8405832 or write to me by e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org@nightshirts.cnofni. Further details as to venue are on the Schola website.
